Wait wait wait... one last brainstorm for a new color scheme:

All opaque versions of some standard colors.  Or maybe 4 opaque with the one 
new/last translucent color:
Opaque Blue, Opaque Red, Opaque Green, Opaque Yellow, transparent Magenta.

No, I don't think this is the silver bullet idea... just something more to 
chew on.
