Hmm... I thought the master was supposed to answer questions about his
understanding of what is, not what he intended something to be

So, "Do you consider this koan to have this quality?"  But not "did
you intend to have this quality in this koan?"

Right, so the master should choose a rule that the students can guess,
so appropriate for the level of the students involved.  *Everyone*
loses if the master fails to choose a guessable rule.
